7 Visits to Turks & Caicos: Why We Keep Going Back
There are places you visit once.
And then there are places that quietly become part of your rhythm.
For us, Turks and Caicos is that place.
We’ve visited seven times — and each trip reminds us why we return.
⸻
The Water Is Truly That Clear
Yes, you’ve seen the photos.
Yes, it really looks like that.
The water is so crystal clear you genuinely cannot tell if you’re swimming in four feet or twenty feet. It’s calm, warm, and impossibly blue — thanks in part to one of the largest barrier reef systems in the region that protects the shoreline.
The beaches are white, powdery sand. No exaggeration.
And if you stay on Grace Bay, you’re on what is consistently ranked one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
A Quiet, Unhurried Island
This is not a party island.
By 9:00–9:30 PM, things wind down. Restaurants close. The streets quiet. The energy softens.
The crowds are typically families and middle-aged couples looking to relax — not nightlife seekers.
If you crave stillness, early mornings, and peaceful evenings… this is your place.
⸻
When We Visit (And Why)
We avoid peak season.
Instead, we travel in:
• May
• Late October – Early November
The water is warmer.
The beaches are less crowded.
And many of the resort units — often owner-owned — are being enjoyed by their owners during these quieter months.
It feels personal. Local. Relaxed.
⸻
Where We Stay
We choose a mid-range resort in the center of Grace Bay, our favorite is Ocean Club West.
In my opinion, you’re on the same spectacular beach as the ultra-luxury resorts — sometimes even more centrally located — but often with chairs spaced further apart and fewer crowds.
It feels refined without being overstated.
⸻
Dining, Coffee & Shopping
The island may be quiet at night, but the dining options are abundant.
You’ll find:
• Fresh seafood (of course)
• Steak
• Burgers
• Pizza
• Beachfront fine dining
• Casual local spots
There are several charming breakfast cafés and coffee shops along the main strip.
Shopping includes:
• Local art
• Handmade jewelry
• Souvenirs
• High-end fine jewelry boutiques
It’s small — but thoughtfully curated.
⸻
The Airport Tip You’ll Thank Me For
The airport can feel hectic — especially on departure days.
My advice? Head upstairs to the grill, order a cocktail, and sit on the balcony. It instantly shifts the mood and makes the wait feel like an extension of vacation.
⸻
Excursions Worth Doing
Private boat charters can be very expensive.
We’ve found that group boat excursions are often:
• Not overly crowded
• Easy to drift away for quiet time
• Or perfect for meeting new friends
Snorkeling is extraordinary.
At:
• Coral Gardens
• Smith’s Reef
Anchored at the reef
You’ll see:
• Colorful tropical fish
• Sea turtles
• Barracuda
• Sting Rays
The occasional reef shark
Take a sunset cruise at least once.
The sky against that water is breathtaking.
We also love sailing a Hobie Cat along the coastline. Floating across water so clear it feels surreal is something you don’t forget.
And everyone should experience the mangroves at least once — where turtles glide beneath you and you may spot a gentle lemon shark.
⸻
Grocery Store Tip
There’s the cutest grocery store right on the main strip stocked with everything you need.
Groceries can run slightly higher due to importing — but we’ve found alcohol to be fairly priced.
We always bring insulated tumblers and make our own beach cocktails. Everything you need is available locally.
⸻
Why We Keep Returning
The weather is consistent.
The water shifts slightly cooler in winter and early spring, warmer as you move into fall.
The locals are incredibly kind — tourism is the island’s heartbeat.
It’s not flashy.
It’s not loud.
It’s beautiful in a quiet, steady way.
And it will absolutely take your breath away.
Everyone should experience it at least once.
In the Season,
Candace
